The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that has served as a catalyst for the creation, presentation, and recognition of experimental art and sound practices in the greater Los Angeles area. Through programs such as the sound. concert series and soundShoppe workshops, SASSAS has worked to bridge visual art and sound communities and present accessible, engaging, site-informed programming throughout the city. After the sound. concert series was initiated in 1999, followed by the founding of SASSAS in 2002, the mission to document all sound. concerts with photographs, audio and video recordings resulted in a vast archive of documentation and ephemera which includes concerts by more than 500 artists including Glenn Branca, Extended Organ with Mike Kelley, Petra Haden, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell, Pauline Oliveros, Stephen Prina Akio Suzuki and James Tenney. Having produced its final sound. concert in 2019, SASSAS is now committed to the SASSAS Archives, including the preservation of physical documents and ephemera, and the preservation and distribution of historic concert documentation online: https://sassas.org/archives/.

SASSAS is supported in part through grants from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the City of West Hollywood Arts Commission, the Good Works Foundation, The Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts, The Jerry and Terri Kohl Family Foundation, Metabolic Studio, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the support of our members especially 33-1/3 Club Members John Baldessari, Ann Goldstein and Christopher Williams, Karen and Stephen Hillenberg, and Abby Sher.
