Polar Goldie Cats formed in 1992 and played their first interdisciplinary instrumental “rock concert” in April ’93 at California Institute of the Arts. The show included snacks as well as performance art pieces, dance, guest artists and an awesome light show. After this forceful entry into pop culture, Polar Goldie Cats had its first cd produced by Nels Cline and released by Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label. The 2nd full length cd was released by Detector records, and the 3rd by Up records. Their music can also be found on many compilations.

The group is influenced by Balinese gamelan, bagpipes, banjo, cats, and large trucks with horns, as well as Dracula and anything that sucks blood. This diverse grouping of interests has resulted in some off-shoot products named: Van Panda, Pss, Soothing Ouch, Opera Cats, Bobb Bruno, and solo performances by Matt Hutchinson and Rafe Mandel, and Rincy Samucake.

They’ve played with: Merzbow, Crib, Thurston Moore, Nels Cline, Deerhoof, Boredoms, Cat Power, Dirty Three, Chrome, Unwound, Low, Red Krayola, Beck, The Geraldine Fibbers, Mogwai, Thinking Fellers Union, authentic Solid Eye, Extended Organ, Upsilon Acrux, lowercase, and many more.
